Racing at Santa Anita with Marc Doche: Tyler Baze finding success early in return

by Marc on October 14, 2012

After winning the Cal Cup Classic with Lucky Primo yesterday, Tyler Baze can continue the quick success he's had with his comeback aboard A Toast to You in today's feature.

How does the best bet at the track get even better? With $207,240 carried over in the Pick-5 after nobody was able to connect on the $.50 minimum wager yesterday. A pool over $1 million is likely and we’ll hope we can catch a few prices and turn a profitable score as we close the third week of racing at the autumn meet and creep ever closer to the Breeders’ Cup.

No stakes action on tap today, but we’ll stick with our look at the featured eighth race, an allowance optional claiming event for 3-year-olds at a mile on turf.

The remarkable return of Tyler Baze continued yesterday with his win aboard Lucky Primo in the Cal Cup Classic and can continue today with 6-to-1 shot A Toast to You looking for his fifth win in career start number nine. Baze was aboard for the only time when the Tribal Rule colt won on debut last June and he can sit the perfect trip today off stopping front-runner No. 10 Very Unusual.

The light has finally turned on for 4-to-1 second choice Huntsville, a winner twice over his last four starts after a long string of disappointments. The son of Unusual Heat defeated older first-level allowance runners two weeks ago and can rally from off the pace to become the first two-time winner of the meet.

A perfect 2-for-2 at a mile on turf, You Know I Know is the tepid 7-to-2 morning line favorite with Rafael Bejarano back in the irons after rolling late aboard the son of Simon Pure to a 1 ½-length victory over Huntsville two starts back at Del Mar. While Bejarano has become Bob Baffert’s main rider over the past few months, he and John Sadler have also connected together over 30% of the time.

We’re off to the races!

Pick 4 -

Leg 1 – Race 6 (1,3,5,6,8,9) – No. 8 Lemon Hero had excuses in her last two and is the top pick packing a late punch with Bejarano aboard, but we’ll spread with No. 1 There Is No Limit, No. 3 Glee, No. 5 Kilted Tilt, No. 6 Deity and No. 9 Minds Eyes.

Leg 2 – Race 7 (1,2,6,8,10,11,12,13) – The slowest winners on the grounds in a race where anything can happen so we’ll spread with No. 1 War Face, No. 2 Sparkle Joel, No. 6 Free Time, No. 8 Frenzo, No. 10 Zombyslayermrdarcy, No. 11 Hidden Quest, No. 12 Warren’s Dr. Boo and No. 13 Rio Good.

Leg 3 – Race 8 (1,2,4,6,7,9) – Along with the trio of No. 4 Huntsville, No. 6 You Know I Know and No. 7 A Toast to You mentioned above, use three more with No. 1 Shadow Runner, No. 2 Equitius and No. 9 Segway.

Leg 4 – Race 9 (1) – The Idaho-bred No. 1 Sugar Spice won’t need to be much to debut with a win against some of the slowest runners on this circuit. She lures Talamo off a consistent set of works, Dean Pederson hits with nearly 20% of his first-time starters and sire Tavasco has hit with a remarkable 7-fo-20 debut runners.

Recap – (1,3,5,6,8,9) w (1,2,6,8,10,11,12,13) w (1,2,4,6,7,9) w (1) – Total cost of ticket = $144

Yesterday’s Result – (+$1,518.40)

Total for current Santa Anita meet – (+$1,190.70)

Total from 12/26/10 – 9/5/12 – (-$2,966.60)

Pick 5 –

Leg 1 – Race 1 (1,2,3,6) – The race loses a major contender with the scratch of No. 5 Spring Bloom, and we settle with four of the six remaining runners using No. 1 Passionville, No. 2 Sudden Sunday, No. 3 Northern Flight and No. 6 Nana Beach.

Leg 2 – Race 2 (1,2,5) – No. 1 Candy Waltz is the most likely winner at a short price, but we’ll search for some value with No. 2 Muchos Besos and No. 5 Buds Pal.

Leg 3 – Race 3 (2,3,4) – Use the pair with speed exiting romps at Fairplex with No. 2 True Again and No. 3 Tricksareforkids, along with class dropper No. 4 Bubba Fizz.

Leg 4 – Race 4 (3,6,9,11) – The first of the year for juveniles coming down the hill and we’ll use four runners that have experience with No. 3 Zippingaroundtown, No. 6 Anytime, No. 9 Power Ped and No. 11 One Firm Cat.

Leg 5 – Race 5 (2,4,6,11) – No. 11 Flashy Delight will get lots of attention debuting for Baffert, but one of the few categories the silver-haired wizard does not excel in is maiden claimers so we’ll add No. 2 Mirror Ball, No. 4 Chloe W and No. 6 Prettypriceygirl.

Recap – (1,2,3,6) w (1,2,5) w (2,3,4) w (3,6,9,11) w (2,4,6,11) – Total cost of ticket = $288

Yesterday’s Result – (-$240)

Total for current Santa Anita meet – (+$433.75)

Total from 7/20/11 – 9/5/12 – (+$17,380.65)

Sorry that your pick four ticket was destroyed by Twirlybird in the last race. Even more irritating that your single choice ran so well in defeat. That’s horseracing I guess.

Even more frustrating, I gave out A Toast to You as my Best Bet of the Day on santaanita.com. If I single him instead I would have gone 4 deep in the final and had Twirlybird.
