Egyptian Femme settled in nicely to her stall at Santa Anita on the eve of her run in the $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes.
For all intents and purposes, the prep races for next month’s Breeders’ Cup culminate on Columbus Day with a pair of $100,000 stakes for juveniles run at a mile on turf. Males go early in the card in the Zuma Beach Stakes, while fillies compete in the Surfer Girl Stakes slotted in the typical feature race slot as the second to last heat on the ten-race card.
The Surfer Girl Stakes is of particular interest for yours truly, as my Cal-bred daughter of Globalize, Egyptian Femme, gets her shot to prove she belongs on this stage. Given no respect at 30-to-1 on the morning line, we’ll hope she has a positive experience and in the process of out-running her odds causes a major surprise on the win end.
Her two previous stakes tries were dismal, but those came on dirt and she never got involved either time over a surface she clearly had no interest running over. Since we acquired her for $8,500 from the Barrett’s May Sale, she’s a perfect 2-for-2 sprinting on the synthetic main track at Golden Gate Fields, while not skipping a beat in training for five months.
Four of today’s rivals exit the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf on September 3 at Del Mar, where the race was won by a 30-to-1 shot not entered today and the top six finishers were separated by one length. Those fillies have the experience edge with a race at a mile on turf under their belts, but the strength of that heat was put into further question with the disappointing performance by the sixth-place finisher against maidens yesterday.
A trio of runners are listed as second choices at 3-to-1 on the morning line, including Bares Tripper, who is likely to go favored off a rousing 6 ¼-length win in the Barrett’s Debutante on September 15. The Sky Mesa filly broke her maiden in track record time this summer at Del Mar, but regressed in her next outing when finishing last in the Sorrento Stakes (Grade III) and may not appreciate the route of ground.
We’re off to the races!
Pick 4 -
Leg 1 – Race 7 (2,4,6,7,9) – A mile on turf to begin the sequence with $25,000 claiming fillies and we spread with No. 2 Ambitoness, No. 4 Malusita, No. 6 Brooklyn Rose, No. 7 Collating Lady and No. 9 Elegant.
Leg 2 – Race 8 (2,3,5,7,9) – In what could very well be an all race, we’ll trim down to half the field with No. 2 First Class Flyer, No. 3 Lookin for Jonesy, No. 5 Ziva the Diva, No. 7 Trapper’s Bounty and No. 9 Twelve Folds.
Leg 3 – Race 9 (2) – As an owner, it’s required to single No. 2 Egyptian Femme.
Leg 4 – Race 10 (1,3,6,7,8,10) – From a stakes for juvenile fillies to the bottom of the maiden-claiming ranks with No. 1 Sultry Season, No. 3 Kiptiddy Do, No. 6 Princesa Corredora, No. 7 Strange Luck, No. 8 Target Engaged and No. 10 Mind Your Biznes.
Recap – (2,4,6,7,9) w (2,3,5,7,9) w (2) w (1,3,6,7,8,10) – Total cost of ticket = $75
Yesterday’s Result – (-$216)
Total for current Santa Anita meet – (-$745.85)
Total from 12/26/10 – 9/5/12 – (-$2,966.60)
Pick 5 –
Leg 1 – Race 1 (1,6,7) – A salty holiday card begin with a wide-open group of Cal-bred maiden claiming sprinters and No. 1 Hello Stormy could have the speed edge breaking from the inside and moving to Tyler Baze.
No. 7 Hanserella just missed in her last two and No. 6 Missdang Sally drops from allowance company and showed speed two back.
Leg 2 – Race 2 (2,4,5,7,8) – Spread five deep with $12,500 3-year-old female sprinters using No. 2 Heart of a Madam, No. 4 Warren’s Morgan, No. 5 Warrens Venedalucy, No. 7 Warren’s Samantha and No. 8 Tip Your Hat.
Leg 3 – Race 3 (2) – A short field of six goes in the Zuma Beach Stakes, with No. 2 Gervinho having the talent to punch his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. A full brother to older stakes-type Lakerville, he looked grand while winning his debut atDel Mar and should relish the mile on turf being a son of Unusual Heat.
Lots of question marks surround the other entrants, with No. 3 Buckleberry Grey and No. 4 Den’s Legacy returning just nine days after getting distanced, a pair of maidens with spotty work tabs and a runner that broke his maiden in the $20,000 claiming ranks at Golden Gate.
Leg 4 – Race 4 (1,2,5,6) – The third six-furlong sprint early in the card for females, this time starter allowance runners and we use four of them with No. 1 Lia Juliana, No. 2 Metaxa, No. 5 Oscillator and No. 6 Miss Lady Ellen.
Leg 5 – Race 5 (2,4,6,9) – Another-four pack to close with females that have never won twice going a mile on turf using No. 2 Warren’s Mo Money, No. 4 Pumpkin Pie, No. 6 Budidinha and No. 9 Briteyednbusytail.
Recap – (1,6,7) w (2,4,5,7,8) w (2) w (1,2,5,6) w (2,4,6,9) – Total cost of ticket = $120
Yesterday’s Result – (-$160)
Total for current Santa Anita meet – (+$119.50)
Total from 7/20/11 – 9/5/12 – (+$17,380.65)
