Racing at Santa Anita with Marc Doche: Breeders’ Cup Friday one week away

by Marc on October 26, 2012

A great shot from behind horses beginning their sprint down Santa Anita's hillside turf course.

We take three spins down the best layout in racing one week out from the Breeders’ Cup with a starter allowance for females that have never won twice slotted in the feature race seventh.

A new face in town gets top billing as the 5-to-2 favorite with Purim’s Dancer shipping in from Arlington Park for Tom Proctor off a 6 ½-length win against maiden claimers going 5 ½-furlongs on the turf. The 3-year-old daughter of Purim gets leading rider Joe Talamo and can repeat her stable mate’s success from this weekend when Broken Dreams notched the Senator Ken Maddy (Grade III) repeat coming the 6 ½-furlongs down the hillside turf course.

Five runners are listed at either 5 or 6-to-1, including Sweet Baguette, who is the only runner with a previous race over this course. The 4-year-old daughter of Redattore ran fifth against open $32,000 claimers three weeks ago coming down the hill and enters on an eight-race losing streak.

Granny Calling is 6-to-1 making her fourth start on a different surface since being acquired by Class Racing Stable over the summer. The 3-year-old Honour and Glory filly did run second in her only try sprinting on turf against first-level allowance competition at Churchill Downs on the first day of May.

With the potential for a quick early pace, things can set up for 5-to-1 shot Oscillator to run them down in her turf debut. The 3-year-old Decarchy filly ran well on the Polytrack in two races to begin her career this summer before taking a small step back when trying the dirt here at Santa Anita on October 8.

We’re off to the races!

Pick 4 -

Leg 1 – Race 5 (5,9,10) – No. 5 Fantastic Mizz and No. 10 Eileen’s Dream can flash early speed and No. 9 Marcyjane will get the chance to run them down after making up good ground over this layout in her debut on September 30.

Leg 2 – Race 6 (4,7,8) – His previous pair of two-turn tries weren’t pretty, but we’ll give No. 8 Guidopanzini another shot stretching out with the potential to clear the field and relax on the lead. In his first try on dirt two weeks ago, he showed a little bit of a new dimension sitting off the pace and passing some horses late to finish as the runner-up to a run away winner.

Add No. 4 Planet Sunshine, who always fires, and No. 7 Liberty Cap, who ran run well in a trio of stakes at Calder before disappointing at Fairplex in his local debut.

Leg 3 – Race 7 (ALL) – It’s an all button here with these nine fillies all having a chance to cross the wire first.

Leg 4 – Race 8 (1,2,6) – No. 2 Miss Communication plummets in class after burning a lot of money against allowance foes and we’ll include her without much confidence while adding the pair of No. 1 Miss Bold Topper and No. 6 Lady Shazzam.

Recap – (5,9,10) w (4,7,8) w (ALL) w (1,2,6) – Total cost of ticket = $121.50

Yesterday’s Result – (-$180)

Total for current Santa Anita meet – (+$1,031.45)

Total from 12/26/10 – 9/5/12 – (-$2,966.60)

Pick 5 –

Leg 1 – Race 1 (3) – Today’s sequence is more like a Pick-4 with the likely procession for No. 3 Code West as the prohibitive favorite.

Leg 2 – Race 2 (1,2,3,5,6) – No. 4 Dance Little Angel can’t win so we’ll use the other five runners.

Leg 3 – Race 3 (1,3,4,6) – No. 6 Off the Wall should be clearing speed and prove tough on the drop in class, but we’ll add the trio of No. 1 Mr. Candy Bar going as a first-time gelding, No. 4 Drift King stalking in second and No. 3 Cherokee Heaven making his third start off a long layoff.

Leg 4 – Race 4 (ALL) – This time we use them all with 3-year-old sprinters that have found their way to the bottom of the claiming ranks.

Leg 5 – Race 5 (5,9,10) – Same trio as the late Pick-4.

Recap – (3) w (1,2,3,5,6) w (1,3,4,6) w (ALL) w (5,9,10) – Total cost of ticket = $210

Yesterday’s Result – (-$240)

Total for current Santa Anita meet – (+$521.05)

Total from 7/20/11 – 9/5/12 – (+$17,380.65)
