Racing at Santa Anita with Marc Doche: $640 million in Pick-6 pool

by Marc on April 1, 2012

Haimish Hy can mow them down late in the $70,000 Sidd Finch in similar fashion to when he won the El Cajon off a layoff.

An April Fool’s Day special with six turf milers going in the $75,000 Sidd Finch Stakes on a Palm Sunday card spiced up by a double Pick-6 carryover of $256,115, which should lead to a pool that exceeds $1.5 million. It’s not the $640 million record Mega Million prize pool that we saw on Friday, but your chances of winning are much better.

Haimish Hy should pack a late punch as the 3-to-1 third choice returning off a nine-month respite and back at the mile distance for the first time since winning the El Cajon off a layoff over Del Mar’s Polytrack in the summer of 2010. The five-year-old son of Ecton Park won the Hollywood Derby (Grade I) two races later, but then experienced little success tackling long-distance graded stakes company in 2011.

Off a quartet of defeats in Grade II events, Calimonco looks for a repeat of his win going a mile on Del Mar’s turf course in the Wickerr last July. The six-year-old son of Storm Cat will do his running from off the pace as the 5-to-2 second choice and should get first run on Haimish Hy.

Favored Dewey’s Special could be vulnerable at 8-to-5 with early speed lined up both inside and outside of him. The seven-year-old son of Skimming debuted for Jeff Mullins after being away for nearly two years by fading in the Arcadia (Grade II) on Feb. 4, but does get the services of Rafael Bejarano for the first time after getting a steady dose of Jose Valdivia Jr.

Big time stakes action continues out of town with the closing day card at Fair Grounds featuring the $1 million Louisiana Derby (Grade II), where Jerry Hollendorfer ships Rousing Sermon with Mike Smith getting the call.

Joel Rosario is also in New Orleans, riding Willyconker in the $400,000 Mervin Muniz Jr. Handicap (Grade II) for Doug O’Neill.

We’re off to the races!

Pick 4 -

Leg 1 – Race 6 (3,6,7,8) – No. 6 Shezabigbroad is a potential Pick-6 single sitting on a big effort in her third off the layoff and second try going a mile on turf, but we’ll spread in the Pick-4 with No. 3 Bodie Girl, No. 7 Unusual Hottie and No. 8 Speedway Monkey.

Leg 2 – Race 7 (1,5,7) – Vladimir Cerin sends a pair with No. 1 Rock This Way and No. 5 Jim’s Decision exiting the same race and No. 7 Miles Long Gone stretches out on the drop in class.

Leg 3 – Race 8 (5,6) – We’ll stick with No. 5 Calimonco and No. 6 Haimishy Hy with the belief that No. 2 Dewey’s Special will be hard-pressed to get to the wire first without getting an easy lead.

Leg 4 – Race 9 (ALL) – We look for value to close the week with all nine runners in this Cal-bred maiden allowance sprint.

Recap – (3,6,7,8) w (1,5,7) w (5,6) w (ALL) – Total cost of ticket = $108

Yesterday’s Result – (-$168)

Total for current Santa Anita winter/spring meet – (-$2,294.50)

Total from 12/26/10-12/18/11 – (+$3,512.05)

Pick 5 –

Leg 1 – Race 1 (ALL) – A short field of five awful runners that are hard to trust so we’ll use them all.

Leg 2 – Race 2 (1,3) – No. 1 Brown Is Beige is an ultra-hard knocker that deserves respect as the favorite, but we’ll add Ms. G.I. Jane off the long layoff on the drop in class.

Leg 3 – Race 3 (2,3,5,6) – Spread four deep in this maiden-claiming sprint for three-year-olds with No. 2 Put It There, No. 3 Beau Royale, No. 6 Tummel and No. 6 Cast a Doubt.

Leg 4 – Race 4 (1,5,6) – Along with Best Bet No. 5 Plenny of Henny, use both Sadler’s with No. 1 Koast and No. 6 Frenemy.

Leg 5 – Race 5 (1,4) – Off four straight third-place efforts, No. 1 Trapper’s Bounty ships south in search of dirt and No. 4 Mona Storm moves back to the dirt off a solid try down the hill.

Recap – (ALL) w (1,3) w (2,3,5,6) w (1,5,6) w (1,4) – Total cost of ticket = $120

Yesterday’s Result – (-$180)

Total for current Santa Anita winter/spring meet – (-$2,563.55)

Total from 7/20/10-12/18/11 (+$1,513.90)

Best Bet of the Day (ROI based off $2 WPS bet)

Race 4 – #5 Plenny of Henny (4/1 ML) – As given out on the Thoroughbred L.A. radio air waves, let’s follow this win-machine up the class ladder in his debut on turf back in the Rafael Becerra barn. He faces a couple runners that have the experience edge having recently broken their maiden down the hill, but those two have the potential to regress and aren’t as battle tested.

Yesterday’s Result – Off the board with Coach Bob (-$6.00)

Total for current Santa Anita winter/spring meet – (-$118.80)
