Even under the lights past 10 o'clock at night Egyptian Femme looked pretty good for a filly that was just purchased for a modest amount.
Just two days away from I’ll Have Another going for the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes, a rough Thursday afternoon card at Hollywood Park made worse by scratches has the focus of our attention elsewhere with Egyptian Femme running in a maiden allowance for 2-year-old fillies at Golden Gate.
Purchased for $8,500 last month at Barrett’s, our Cal-bred filly by Globalize runs for a $28,500 purse today along with an $8,550 bonus for trainer Genaro Vallejo, who’s clicking at nearly 25% with horses making their first start in his care.
The late scratch of likely favorite Seattle Charlie leaves us facing six other Cal-breds in this race written for open company and Egyptian Femme is the only runner with experience after a fifth-place effort in a two-furlong sprint where the winner set the track record.
Egyptian Femme galloped out well clear of the rest of the field behind the winner in her debut and the runner-up from that heat came back to win.
Aaron Gryder was aboard for her final work and takes the call to add to our confidence.
Out of the stakes winning dam Zak’s Precocious, Egyptian Femme is a full sister to both Zanbo, who’s run second in her last two races going long on the turf against maiden allowance company at Hollywood Park, and three-time winner Amelia Rose.
Let’s get lucky as …
We’re off to the races!
Pick 4 -
Leg 1 – Race 5 (2,3,4,5,7,8) – A competitive turf sprint for Cal-bred allowance optional claiming runners where No. 8 Red Defense is favored on the drop in class, but a horse we’ll continue to try and beat by spreading with No. 2 Suances Candy, No. 3 Warren’s Dr. Yang, No. 4 My Summer Slew, No. 5 Nofty and No. 7 Blue Jay Attack.
Leg 2 – Race 6 (4,6) – Looks chalky here with either No. 4 Visible Marq or No. 6 Megaride getting the money with No. 1 Showmethemoneyjim scratched.
Leg 3 – Race 7 (ALL) – Clodhopper is the only three-time winner in the field and worth inclusion despite a poorU.S. debut in a race where we hit the all button.
No. 4 Whole Enchilada is likely out-classed, but we won’t just leave her out especially since she’s won two straight.
Leg 4 – Race 8 (3,4,5) – No. 3 Sizzlin’ Joe should dispose of this lackluster bunch at a short price, but we’ll add No. 4 Jolly Joseph and No. 5 Surely Swift in hopes of an upset.
Recap – (2,3,4,5,7,8) w (4,6) w (ALL) w (3,4,5) – Total cost of ticket = $108
Sunday’s Result – (-$135)
Total for current Hollywood Park spring/summer meet – (-$1,917.40)
Total from 12/26/10 – 4/22/12 – (+$588.70)
Pick 5 –
Leg 1 – Race 1 (1,4,6) – No. 6 Jilly Baylee drops from a pair of allowance heats and both No. 1 Speedinthruthecity and No. 4 Ziraili are dangerous first out for potent connections out of sires that hit with a high percentage of debut runners.
Leg 2 – Race 2 (1,3,4,6) – Maiden claimers over a distance of ground and we’ll go four deep with No. 1 A Day Away, No. 3 Noble Kent, No. 4 Givimaway and No. 6 Willie Brown.
Leg 3 – Race 3 (3) – With our top two choices scratched, we land on a lone speed single with No. 3 Capture the Call in this four-horse field.
Leg 4 – Race 4 (1,2,3,6) – Another four-pack of maiden claimers going two turns with No. 1 I’m Always Hopeful, No. 2 Pardon My Excess, No. 3 Unusual Darling and No. 6 Wildakceleration.
Leg 5 – Race 5 (2,3,4,5,7,8) – Same six as the late Pick-4.
Recap – (1,4,6) w (1,3,4,6) w (3) w (1,2,3,6) w (2,3,4,5,7,8) – Total cost of ticket = $144
Sunday’s Result – (-$108)
Total for current Hollywood Park spring/summer meet – (+$43.10)
Total from 7/20/11 – 4/22/12 – (+$2,150.80)

Congrats on your filly’s win at GGF today. The Cal-Bred bonus is pretty awesome.
Thanks! Very nice of you to drop me a line. What a great feeling to win a race and a pretty lucrative one at that.
