Racing at Hollywood Park with Marc Doche: Acclamation stays on sidelines

by Marc on April 27, 2012

Holladay Road's versatility will suit him well facing just three rivals in tonight's $100,000 Inglewood Handicap (Grade III).

The 2012 debut of last year’s Eclipse Award-winning Older Male is delayed for now, with Acclamation scratched from tonight’s $100,000 Inglewood Handicap (Grade III) over 1/8-miles on turf. Reports surfaced that the six-year-old son of Unusual Heat took a couple of bad steps yesterday, and although precautionary x-rays today were negative, trainer Don Warren elected to play it safe.

That leaves us with just four horses and Holladay Road likely to go favored for Julio Canani, who comes out looking like a genius by entering this race instead of waiting for tomorrow’s Gold Rush program for California-breds. Since being claimed for $25,000 last summer at Del Mar, the seven-year-old son of Street Cry has won 4-of-7 starts from off the pace including an open first-level allowance over this turf course in December.

Making his third start as a four-year-old, Smug has the most room for improvement off a stylish win at Santa Anita on March 24 going a furlong further than tonight’s heat. With the heady Joel Rosario aboard, the son of El Prado might find himself on the early lead and prove difficult to run down.

We’re off to the races!
