Racing at Del Mar with Marc Doche: Winding Way to a potential Pick-6 single

by Marc on August 19, 2012

Winding Way has done nothing wrong winning clear in her first two career starts.

Carryover madness book ends the week after two straight days of nobody picking six winners leading to $442,770 to begin a pool that’s likely to push $3 million again.

Winding Way makes the leap into graded stakes company as the 2-to-1 favorite in the $150,000 Ranch Bernardo (Grade III) over 6 ½-furlongs on the main track off a pair of dazzling wins to start her career. The 3-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon has led every step of the way in both races racking up a combined 12 lengths worth of wins while posting 97 and 95 Beyer speed figures.

There should be plenty of company on the front end today meaning 3-to-1 third choice Sugarinthemorning could sit the perfect trip just off the pace with all the speed to her inside. The 4-year-old daughter of Candy Ride exits a runner-up effort in the A Gleam (Grade II) and is the only runner in the field with a pair of wins over this main track.

The under card sees Cal-bred females at a mile on turf in the $100,000 Solana Beach Handicap with 11-time winner Halo Dolly the 5-to-2 favorite looking for a repeat. The 4-year-old daughter of Popular carries six more pounds today as the 122-lb. high weight than she did when winning this race by 1 ¼-lengths last year.

Antares World has also been a model of consistency, finishing in the exacta in 16-of-25 career starts and owning a win over Halo Dolly in the Pacific Heights at Golden Gate last December. The 5-year-old daughter of Decarchy is another that can benefit by sitting just off what should be a contested early pace.

If she can run back to her win in the Frans Valentine from last year, Logical Single can upset at 8-to-1 making just her second start of 2012. The 5-year-old daughter of Singletary has a consistent work tab since a disappointing effort sprinting at Hollywood Park in May.

We’re off to the races!

Pick 4 -

Leg 1 – Race 6 (2,6,7) – Use the pair discussed above with No. 2 Winding Way and No. 7 Sugarinthemorning along with No. 6 Glamorista, who can also do some running from off the pace for Bob Baffert.

Leg 2 – Race 7 (1,2,3,6,9) – Five maiden allowance juvenile fillies with No. 1 Miss Derek, No. 2 Secret Movie, No. 3 Madame Cactus, No. 6 Truly Marie and No. 9 Secret Memo.

Leg 3 – Race 8 (2,4,5,9) – Add No. 2 Sparkling Style to the trio above of No. 4 Antares World, No. 5 Logical Single and No. 9 Halo Dolly.

Leg 4 – Race 9 (5,8,9,10) – Four bottom-level maiden claimers to close the day with No. 5 I Run for Fun, No. 8 Danger Lurking, No. 9 A.P. Corsair and No. 10 Lea Von.

Recap – (2,6,7) w (1,2,3,6,9) w (2,4,5,9) w (5,8,9,10) – Total cost of ticket = $120

Yesterday’s Result – (-$54)

Total for current Del Mar meet – (+$51.95)

Total from 12/26/10 – 7/15/12 – (-$1,571.15)

Pick 5 –

Leg 1 – Race 1 (3,4,6,7) – Marathoners on turf using sharp runners No. 3 Te Rapa, No. 6 Lime Rickey and No. 7 Yomybato.

Leg 2 – Race 2 (2,3,9) – No. 3 Life a Riley was impressive in her debut only getting beaten by a stable mate. She’ll be tough today, but we’ll search for value adding No. 2 Mr Lemon Tree and No. 9 Rob’s Pal.

Leg 3 – Race 3 (1,3,6) – Nine claimers with each not posting a work since last raced and No. 3 Yankee Dan knocks hard at this level on the front end, but we add No. 1 McAllister Boys on the barn switch and No. 6 Deal’ Em.

Leg 4 – Race 4 (1,2,5,8,10) – The customary spread with non-winners of two lifetime using No. 1 Oskar Hval, No. 2 Sweet Elation, No. 5 Panettone, No. 8 Lewdawg N Paradise and No. 10 Aragon Sword.

Leg 5 – Race 5 (2,6) – In the exacta in 6-of-11 lifetime starts, No. 2 Collating Lady can build off an impressive main track win over a next out winner from earlier in the meet. The late scratch of In a Twinkling means the projected pace duel won’t materialize, meaning No. 6 Folk Dancer is a threat to lead all the way.

Recap – (3,6,7) w (2,3,9) w (1,3,6) w (1,2,5,8,10) w (2,6) – Total cost of ticket = $135

Yesterday’s Result – (-$216)

Total for current Del Mar meet – (+$17,282.30)

Total from 7/20/11 – 7/15/12 – (+$1,874.55)
