A pair of dirty noses on the turf cost us a five-figure pay day yesterday, but we’ve brushed it off and pulled up our boot straps heading into an exciting weekend that kicks off with 4 o’clock Friday and California-bred 2-year-old fillies sprinting 5 ½-furlongs on the main track in the $100,000 CTBA Stakes.
Benefiting from a perfect pace-pressing trip to win her debut at Hollywood Park on June 24, Tribal Peace is the 5-to-2 favorite drawn outside in post No. 7 for John Sadler. The daughter of Tribal Rule cleared turning for home in that win and dug in gamely to hold off Cotton’s Point through the lane.
Cotton’s Point was making her second career start and has since transferred partial ownership to our friends over at Summit Racing. It was a big improvement for the daughter of Salt Lake after a fourth-place finish in her debut and the maiden is listed as the 3-to-1 co-second choice needing only slight improvement for the potent combo of Jeff Bonde and Edwin Maldanado to get the money tonight.
Off a third-place finish in the Cinderella Stakes on June 16, Tilde is also 3-to-1 with Rafael Bejarano aboard the daughter of Swiss Yodeler for the third time. They dug in valiantly on the rail to win when debuting on May 20 and can sit a stalking trip just off the speed.
Gary Sherlock sends a pair of 8-to-1 shots with Akiss Forarose breaking from the rail after rallying past Cotton’s Point and others to break her maiden when debuting on June 2 and Awe’ Some Kitten, who posted a field best 72 Beyer when breaking her maiden two starts back, but faded to finish fifth in the Cinderella.
We’re off to the races!
Pick 4 -
Leg 1 – Race 5 (2,5,7,9,11) – Bottom-level claimers at six furlongs on the main track and we spread with No. 2 American Wildcat, No. 5 Deputiformer, No. 7 Itssultryinthecape, No. 9 Arabian Storm and No. 11 Imperial Pride.
Leg 2 – Race 6 (3,7,9) – The lone multiple winner in the field, No. 3 Distort This ships in from Kentucky with three victories, two of those coming over his last three races. The last time he was on the turf he broke his maiden sprinting five furlongs at Arlington last summer. Best of all, he’s almost sure to be lone speed and he’s in good hands with John Sadler.
If he tires, both No. 7 Ransom Canyon and No. 9 Seventh Avenue get jock upgrades and can motor late.
Leg 3 – Race 7 (ALL) – Lightly-raced 2-year-old fillies in stakes action where anything can happen so we’ll use all seven runners.
Leg 4 – Race 8 (1,2,11) – No. 1 Pork Chop drops to the bottom and should be running late, No. 2 Hammer the Bay also drops and is tough if you toss his last and No. 11 Sparkle Joel is a live long shot moving from inside to outside.
Recap – (2,5,7,9,11) w (3,7,9) w (ALL) w (1,2,11) – Total cost of ticket = $157.50
Yesterday’s Result – (-$168)
Total for current Del Mar meet – (+$379.20)
Total from 12/26/10 – 7/15/12 – (-$1,571.15)
Pick 5 –
Leg 1 – Race 1 (ALL) – No. 6 Promiscuoussuances should be clearing speed and romped by over three lengths over maidens when last seen at Del Mar, but she’s the only one to break her maiden against claimers so we’ll punch the all button.
Leg 2 – Race 2 (1,2,3,4,7) – Spread five deep in this turf dash with No. 1 A Toe by Three, No. 2 Norm’s Passion, No. 3 Red Defense, No. 4 Quietly Mine and No. 7 A Toast to You.
Leg 3 – Race 3 (7) – The scratch of No. 1 Mary Contrary leaves No. 7 D’princess as lone speed and getting the bug boy weight break for the first time. Her sire D’wildcat has won with 16% of his starters on Del Mar’s Polytrack.
Leg 4 – Race 4 (2,3,5,9) – Stick with the four logical runners in this Cal-bred maiden allowance on turf using No. 2 Zanbo, No. 3 Miss Well Molded, No. 5 Passionville and No. 9 Marlenadarlena.
Leg 5 – Race 5 (5,11) – Narrow it down to a pair with No. 5 Deputiformer, who sees his tag cut in half off the long break and ran well here last summer, and No. 11 Imperial Pride, a threat on the front end and perfect over this main track.
Recap – (ALL) w (1,2,3,4,7) w (7) w (2,3,5,9) w (5,11) – Total cost of ticket = $100
Yesterday’s Result – (-$144)
Total for currentDelMar meet – (-$288)
Total from 7/20/11 – 7/15/12 – (+$1,874.55)

Happy Friday Marc!!!
Does it get any better than this? Opening day at the Spa. Del Mar kicking into full swing. So much good action – I had to call my boss at work this morning and explain why I would not be coming in to the office today. LOL!!!
Had a decent early P4 score at Saratoga, and your boy Rosario rode a fine race on Pacific Ocean at odds of 6-1 that made the afternoon a good one for me. There was a wicked thunder storm that ripped through eastern North Carolina around 5pm EST that temporarily disabled my internet… ruining my ability to place a late pick 3 wager. My would have been $18 ticket would have been a loser, so this “Act of God” ended up saving me some bank roll for tonight’s late pick 4 at Del Mar. Things like that just give me the feeling that I am about to bust out of this cold streak in a big way!!!
I know this is a west coast blog… but tonight I will ask bring up a general racing question that is inspired by events taking place in the east tomorrow. I haven’t heard anyone in the media make mention of this, so I will bring it up here.
When was the last time a jockey won 3 stakes races on the same day… at 3 different tracks???
I don’t know if it has ever been done, but Ramon Dominguez has a legit shot to do it tomorrow. He is scheduled to ride the first 3 races at Saratoga tomorrow. The first race is at 1:00 EST and is a 100K stakes in which Dominguez rides the ML 4-1 third choice in the race. He then has a mount at 5:15 EST in a 100K stakes on a live 8-1 shot at Delaware Park. He follows up 30 minutes later in the Del Cap on 9/5 second choice Awesome Maria. At 7:10 EST he is scheduled to ride in a 50K stakes at Colonial Downs on a 6-1 third choice. At 8:05, he is scheduled to ride the overwhelming 6/5 favorite in the Virginia Oaks. (his VA Derby mount is expected to scratch, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he picked up a mount late)
Win or lose, I think this is a pretty cool story. Alan Garcia is scheduled to ride races at all 3 tracks tomorrow as well, but he doesn’t have a mount in the Saratoga stakes. They will certainly be racking up the frequent flyer miles tomorrow for sure.
IMO, Ramon Dominguez is the hardest working jock in the business.
Off to Colonial for the VA Derby, and will be at Saratoga starting Friday for a week of racing!
Later buddy!!!
Cheese
Great to have awesome racing to watch and play on. I had a blast on opening day and made some money, but would have been a lot more if Tones had won. Tough beats yesterday and total white wash today. Heading down there bright and early with the family for the weekend.
Very interesting note about Ramon and the other jocks. Will keep my eye on that tomorrow. Amazing that’s even possible with those track so close together. Imagine they still take a helicopter or a private jet.
Be safe, good luck and have fun in Virginia and at the Spa!
