Racing at Del Mar with Marc Doche: Executiveprivilege bears lots of weight in Sorrento

by Marc on August 8, 2012

Executiveprivilege looks to win as the odds-on favorite for the third time to start her career in today's $150,000 Sorrento Stakes (Grade III).

A trio of races for 2-year-old fillies are part of Wednesday’s eight-race card, including the late double that begins with the $150,000 Sorrento Stakes (Grade III) over 6 ½-furlongs on the main track and concludes a Pick-6 sequence where a carryover of $257,477 should lead to a pool that approaches $2 million.

The majority of Pick-6 bettors will look to single 4-to-5 favorite Executiveprivilege in the Sorrento off a pair of easy wins by a combined 7 ¾-lengths to begin her career. The daughter of First Samurai fetched $625,000 through the OBS auction ring in April and breezed by today’s second choice in the Landaluce on July 14.

That Landaluce runner-up is Speedinthruthecity, listed at 5-to-1 on today’s morning line and one of two entered by the red-hot Peter Miller. The City Zip filly debuted by breaking her maiden on turf against boys and has trained steadily over Polytrack.

Bares Tripper broke the local track record at five furlongs when unveiled for an $80,000 tag by Miller two weeks ago and is the co-third choice at 6-to-1. The daughter of Sky Mesa could have more in the tank after Garrett Gomez covered up on her late in that debut after a mild hand ride through the stretch when disposing of three out-matched rivals.

Back just 10 days after winning on debut, Switch to the Lead is also 6-to-1. The daughter of Songandapryaer gave champion Japanese jockey Yuichi Fukunaga his first and only win of the meet.

We’re off to the races!

Pick 4 -

Leg 1 – Race 5 (4,7,8,9,13) – Females that have never won twice and while she’s shown she isn’t too keen on winning, No. 13 Warren’s Performer deserves another chance after getting wrangled throughout by Gomez last time. Maldanado takes over today and should get her into the race early giving her a chance to be in the hunt late.

Spread with No. 4 Punch Drunk, No. 7 Queen Mercury, No. 8 Brooklyn Rose and No. 9 Bila Shaka.

Leg 2 – Race 6 (1,8,10,12) – No. 1 Full Instinct stretches out off the long layoff, while shedding both the hood and his nuts and could be dangerous on the lead cutting the corner out of the chute and into the clubhouse turn.

Use the additional trio of No. 8 Swift Eagle, No. 10 Dugan Bill and No. 12 Unusual Jazz.

Leg 3 – Race 7 (2,6,7,9) – No. 7 Executiveprivilege is obvious off her two races, but these are juvenile fillies so the landscape can change in a hurry and the key to any value in the sequence is beating her so we’ll try to do just that with No. 2 Renee’s Titan, No. 6 Speedinthruthecity and No. 9 Bares Tripper.

Leg 4 – Race 8 (2,3,5,10) – A full field of maiden 2-year-old fillies trying two turns for the first time, but No. 2 Dance Team is one of the few with turf experience after rallying for second when breaking from the disadvantageous far outside post sprinting at Hollywood Park. Richard Mandella hits with 25% of his second-time starters, Gomez rides back and the daughter of Dynaformer is bred up and down to go long on the lawn.

No. 3 Renee’s Queen exits a fourth-place finish in the Landaluce, while No. 5 Jerry’shoneycarol and No. 10 Purple Prose were only a couple lengths behind Dance Team in their last.

Recap – (4,7,8,9,13) w (1,8,10,12) w (2,6,7,9) w (2,3,5,10) – Total cost of ticket = $160

Sunday’s Result – (-$90)

Total for current Del Mar meet – (+$245.45)

Total from 12/26/10 – 7/15/12 – (-$1,571.15)

Pick 5 –

Leg 1 – Race 1 (1,3,4,7) – A short field of six baby fillies begin the day in this $50,000 claimer in a race where we considered entering Egyptian Femme, but instead opted to stay up north for the Wine Country Debutante on Saturday.

No. 7 Awe’ Some Kitten is the only runner dropping in for a tag for the first time and could be tough pressing the pace with the ideal outside draw and blinkers on for the first time.

We’ll search for value with No. 1 Ruler of the Tribe, No. 3 Hyena and No. 4 Set’n On Ready.

Leg 2 – Race 2 (2,6,8,9) – This time it’s males that have never won twice and it’s another four-pack with No. 2 Apply, No. 6 Power Series, No. 8 Heart Fever and No. 9 Midnight Con.

Leg 3 – Race 3 (2) – No. 2 Smokey Lonesome was good to us as a single last time and can sit the perfect stalking trip again today for new trainer Ron Ellis. He’s shown an affinity for improving in his second off a layoff and that would mean another huge effort after a big run last time.

Leg 4 – Race 4 (1,3,7,9,12) – Five bottom-level maiden claimers with No. 1 Suances Vixen, No. 3 War Excess, No. 7 Jammin Lady Louli, No. 9 Quiet Sunshine and No. 12 Breathless.

Leg 5 – Race 5 (4,7,8,9,13) – Same five as the Pick-4.

Recap – (1,3,4,7) w (2,6,8,9) w (2) w (1,3,7,9,12) w (4,7,8,9,13) – Total cost of ticket = $200

Sunday’s Result – (-$144)

Total for current Del Mar meet – (+$16,554.45)

Total from 7/20/11 – 7/15/12 – (+$1,874.55)
